PERSONALITY AND APPEARANCE OF THE DALMATIAN

People all over the world have experienced the loving, athletic and family oriented nature of the Dalmatian. When dalmatians are born they are completely white, unless they are patched. This means that the dog is born with a solid mass of colouring anywhere on the body. The colouring of a Dalmatian can either be black and white or liver and white, any other colour is not acceptable in a show dog, and rarely occur. They started to form and develop their spotting patterns at about 3 to 4 weeks old, however the spotting will grow with the body as the puppy ages and matures.
When the puppies first get their spots they are light and faint, but as the dog grows and matures the colour darkens; the spots are fully formed and will not change until they reach their senior years. When Dalmatians get older they get freckles or ticking, these are small spots that appear mostly on the legs and face. Due to the gene that forms the spots Dalmatians can be deaf, however we try to avoid this by breeding the healthiest dogs who have past their hearing tests.
All dalmatian puppies are BAER tested which is also known as Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response test. This test detects electrical activity in the cochlea and auditory pathways, like an antenna detects radio or TV signals. The response will determine whether the dog is Bilateral (Hearing in both ears), Unilateral (Hearing in One ear) or Deaf (Hearing in neither ears). The response is tested by electrodes which are placed under the skin on the scalp; each ear is tested separately.
The dalmatian is a very athletic and sporty looking dog with a friendly and loving attitude. Unfortunately some people have experienced the dalmatian in a negative light due to the over breeding of dogs with the release of the movie 101 Dalmatians. This created an over popularized fad for the dalmatian, however not in a good way. The dalmatian became a very popular backyard or puppy mill bred breed, which lead to aggression and health problems in the puppies that were being produced. However at PaisleyPella Dalmatians as well as other breeders around the world, we are trying to reshape the image of the Dalmatian. Slowly but surely this breed will be known as what we see it! Kind, loving, loyal, athletic, family oriented and beautiful!
