The purpose of vaccines and what they defend against

The purpose of a vaccine is to protect your pet from common or harmful diseases. Vaccinations will need to be boostered (given more than once) to slowly introduce the vaccine into the system of your new pet. Breaking up the vaccines allows the pets body to full accept the vaccine, without overwhelming your puppies immune system. In dogs there are many vaccines, however there are a set of core vaccinations (the most important) that your pet should receive.

Core Vaccines

DA2= Distemper- It is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause vomiting and diarrhea, discharge from the eyes and nose, coughing and eventually seizures and neurological signs.

CPV=Parvo Virus- Is a highly contagious disease that generally includes severe vomiting and diarrhea, lack of appetite, listlessness, depression and fever.

P= Parainfluenza= Is a highly contagious respiratory virus that often causes "Kennel Cough" in dogs. There is both an injectable and intranasal form of this vaccine.
These firs 3 vaccines are an injertable vaccines that combines all three. The short form for these vaccines is DA2PCPV.

RV= Rabies Vaccine- Is a virus transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. This is also the only vaccine you need to get into the United States of America with your dog if you have the certificate. This vaccine is given at 16 weeks never earlier.

Non-Core Vaccines

LV=Lyme Vaccine- This disease is caused by a type of bacteria and is transmitted to dogs through the bite of a tick.

Bord/ Bordp= Bordetella- This vaccine is given to prevent kennel cough in dogs. This vaccines can either be injectable (Bord), intranasal (Bordp) or oral (Bord). You and your vet should have a discussion about which one is best for your pet and which can help protect your pet the most.

Always make sure to go to your vet once a year to make sure your pet is healthy, even if vaccines are not due. Annual exams could possibly catch something that may not have been seen otherwise! In this breed it is a good idea to run blood every year to keep a running tally on the ALT levels. It can also be used as a base line if your pet ever gets sick.

Dogs are a lifetime commitment!
